Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is a type of conversation therapy, during which the psychotherapist uses various techniques (from his theoretical orientation and knowledge of psychopathology and personality psychology) to help a client in the best way possible.

Although techniques and psychotherapeutic direction are in some cases important for the progress of a client, there are more and more indications that the relationship between a client and a therapist is the key factor in the progress and recovery process. This specific relationship involves something we call a “corrective emotional experience”, where during psychotherapy, a client learns that he can build a different type of relationship with other people than what he is used to, as well as begin to experience himself in a different and more positive way. In short, through psychotherapy we learn to get to know ourselves better, to reduce our difficulties and to develop our full potential as a person.

Everyone who feels need for a change (or want to change something about themselves) comes to psychotherapy. A person does not necessarily have to have a mental disorder to go to psychotherapy! Very often people come due to some losses, difficult life circumstances, problems in relationships and like.

Psychotherapy usually involves working in continuity, with the client coming to therapy once a week, and the duration of one session is one hour. Sometimes it is less or more often than once a week, depending on the possibilities and needs of a client, and we agree on that part together. The process of psychotherapy does not have a definite duration. Although we always try to help the client in the most adequate way to overcome his difficulties as soon as possible, many elements affect the process and the outcome of the therapy. Therefore, therapy can last only a few sessions (in the form of consultations), a few months, and some people come for a few years for psychotherapy. It all depends on the type of problem the person is experiencing, as well as other individual factors. There are problems that we can solve through a few sessions, and there are also those that require continuous work that, in some cases, can last longer than a year.

The confidentiality of the information provided by a client is guaranteed! This is regulated by the code of ethics of the profession, so it is forbidden to give any information about the client and the session, except in extraordinary circumstances, about which the client is always informed in advance.

The best option is to come live for psychotherapy, but if for certain reasons a client cannot do that, there is a possibility of scheduling online psychotherapy as well.

The goal of psychotherapy is to empower and encourage a client for the changes he has made and for those he has yet to make, and therapist’s task is to combine different techniques and methods and to adapt to a client to help him solve current problem faster, more efficiently, and to empower him for the future.

Psychotherapy could be done in different frameworks: individual therapy, couples therapy, family therapy or group therapy. Depending on the client’s needs, sometimes individual therapy is transformed into family or couples psychotherapy, if a client and a therapist agree together that it is in the best interest of a client.
